Projects help you to organize your routes, waypoints, and other data in Goat Maps. Everything you create is stored in a project.
If you only have a single project Goat Maps will show a simplified version of the My Data tab that does not include information about projects.
Active Project
There is always 1 project selected as the Active Project. Any newly created data will go into the active project, this includes recorded tracks, new waypoints, new routes, new folders and imported files.
The Active Project can be selected on the My Data tab.
If you only have 1 project, it is the active project.
Creating a Project
To create a project, select My Data -> Projects -> Tap the plus sign
Project Visibility
Visibility for each project can be controlled in the My Data tab. This controls whether the project will show on the map.
Sharing Projects
Projects can be shared with other people, in read, write, or admin mode. To share a project select it, then go to the sharing tab.
- Read - People with read access to a project can view data in the project. They can also copy it to their own projects, or export it.
- Write - People with write access to a project can view, edit, delete, and add new data to the project.
- Admin - Admin access grants the same permissions as Write access, but also lets users manage sharing, including inviting new admins.
Suggested uses for projects
Keep it simple: If you’re starting fresh and not collaborating, one project is plenty.
Migrating from another app: Import into a dedicated “Imported from ___” project to keep source data grouped and easy to hide/show.
Big or group trips: Create one project per trip. Import reference GPX files, do all planning there, copy in prior local tracks, share with partners and emergency contacts, and export the whole project as a GPX if needed.
Events (races/group hikes): Put the route and aid/POI locations in a single project, then share the project. Anyone using it in Goat Maps will see your updates. (Public project links are planned for fall 2025.)
